Independent Contractor Role Purpose
Music Festival Stage Managers are responsible for the smooth operation of stages during the event, ensuring that all performances run seamlessly. This role requires a high level of organization, leadership, and problem-solving skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Previous experience in stage management and volunteer management is strongly preferred.
Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Show Advancing: Serve as one of the primary contact points for artists and their teams, ensuring all needs and schedules are met.
- Stage Management: Oversee the setup, operation, and teardown of assigned stages, ensuring efficient handling of all technical and logistical aspects.
- Crew Supervision: Lead and manage a team of stagehands, volunteers, and technical staff, providing clear direction and support throughout the event.
- Technical Coordination: Work closely with audio, lighting, and other technical teams to ensure all equipment is set up and functioning properly.
- Schedule Adherence: Monitor and enforce the event schedule, making real-time adjustments to keep performances on track.
- Problem Solving: Quickly identify and resolve any issues, whether related to technical difficulties, artist needs, or crew management.
- Communication: Maintain clear and consistent communication with the Assistant Production Managers and key stakeholders throughout the event and pre-event process. This may include SXSW meetings or check-ins, phone calls, and email coordination, resulting in 5 hours per week during February.
Pre-Event Responsibilities
- Attend up to 3 pre-event meetings on Mondays in February from 6-9p
- Advance all assigned music showcases, resulting in 5 hours per/week during February.
On-Site Responsibilities
- Oversee the execution of live shows, ensuring all elements run smoothly according to the setlist and schedule. Communicate any delays or issues to APMs.
- Provide guidance and support to volunteer stagehands, ensuring they are effectively trained and integrated into the team for the duration of the event.
Qualifications Include
Qualifications & Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of stage management experience, preferably in a live event or festival setting.
- Proven ability to lead and manage a team, with strong decision-making skills.
- Familiarity with backline, stage equipment, audio systems, lighting, and other relevant technical aspects.
- Strong ability to think on your feet and easily handle unexpected challenges.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse teams.
- Willingness to work long hours, including nights and weekends, throughout the festival.
- Must be 21+ years of age
- The candidate is required to be located in Austin, TX.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for long periods and lift to 50lbs. with or without accommodation.

Work Location & Schedule
- This is an Independent Contractor role.
- February Pre-Event Preparation: Approximately five hours per week throughout February. Attendance at three to four mandatory in-person meetings during February.
- Event Week Commitment: Active participation in 4-6 nights of music showcases during the SXSW Music Festival March 10th-15th 2025.
- Shifts will vary depending on the venue showcase schedule and load-in times, but typical hours range from 4 PM to 2 AM.
- Flexibility: Be prepared for potential changes in schedule as the festival is closer to execution.
Compensation
$300/working day, meals provided, parking provided, & a badge as compensation for advance work.
