Founded in 1938, Stern Grove Festival is a free summer music festival in San Francisco. Now entering its 87th season, the Festival draws close to 100,000 people during its ten-week series of world class performances in the outdoor setting of Sigmund Stern Grove. Past seasons have included artists including The Flaming Lips, San Francisco Symphony, Kool & the Gang, Phil Lesh & Friends, Patti Smith, Los Lobos, Bob Moses, Smokey Robinson, Ziggy Marley, Carlos Santana, Allen Stone, and Janelle Monae.
Position Description
Stern Grove Festival is currently hiring for Operations Floater Staff. This means that we will have you work on any of our teams. The below are the descriptions of the teams. We will work to give preference but the needs change each week and we are looking for staff that is open to this arrangement. Please read below and fill out an application. Perimeter Team
Stern Grove Festival Perimeter Staff will assist in the smooth functioning of the Festival perimeter, entrances, vehicle and pedestrian routes and pathways, shuttle service and parking lots. The Perimeter Team will oversee the setup and control of the perimeter, venue entrances, shuttle queue and pathway. Perimeter Staff will work with the Safety, Ticket, and House teams to facilitate crowd management and control, response to patron health and safety requests and concerns, emergency response protocols, and any additional duties that pertain to the smooth functioning of the venue. Perimeter Staff may be re-deployed to a new position on the Safety, Ticket, or House teams as and if needed.
Safety Team
Stern Grove Festival Safety Staff will assist all activities and services related to the safety and comfort of patrons, with a goal of creating a positive experience for all audience members. The primary location of their work is on the Perimeter at the Entrances of the venue. Safety Staff will assist on-site, operational needs including Magnetometer and Bag searches, search area set-up and strike, crowd management and control, response to patron requests and concerns, emergency response protocols, and any additional duties that pertain to the smooth functioning of the venue. Safety Staff may be re-deployed to a new position on the Perimeter, Ticket, or House teams as and if needed.
Ticket Team
Stern Grove Festival Ticket Staff will assist with free ticket scanning activities and services during patron arrival and entry with a goal of creating a positive experience for all audience members. The primary location of their work is at the Entrances of the venue. Ticket Staff will assist on-site operational needs including general admission, shuttle, and VIP patron processing area set-up and strike, crowd management and control, response to patron requests and concerns, emergency response protocols, and any additional duties that pertain to the smooth functioning of the venue. Ticket Staff may be re-deployed to a new position on the Perimeter, Safety, or House teams as and if needed, usually in the form of egress monitoring along pedestrian + vehicle routes.
Availability and Commitment
- Stern Grove will take applications for anyone who can work any of the dates during the Summer Season.
- Hiring priority goes to staff who can work most or all of the dates:
- Concerts: Sundays from July 28 - August 25 + Saturday August 24th, 2024
Concert and Orientation days subject to change or cancellation. We will inform you of any changes as soon as possible.
House Staff can expect a schedule of between 6 and 10 hours each weekend, averaging eight hours per week over the course of the Season. There are hours available for pre-season build days and each Saturday toward equipment set-up (scheduling dependent on interest and availability).
Reporting Relationships
Operations Staff report directly to their House Leader. In addition, House Staff work closely with the House Manager, Assistant House Manager, Perimeter, Safety, and Reservation Teams, Security and Medical teams, and other SGFA Staff.
General Duties
- Attend pre-season orientations and Concert Dry Run to learn about the organization's culture, understand the Operations Staff role in producing the Festival, get hands-on experience with equipment, and participate in venue safety drills.
- Assist in the set-up and breakdown of equipment, including barricades, aisles, fencing, signage, tables and benches.
- Maintain Concert Meadow gates and monitor patron ingress and egress.
- Promote public safety and cultivate a positive patron experience within the assigned area by welcoming, interacting with, and informing patrons of policy and procedure.
- Perform crowd control, including maintaining clear aisle ways and emergency exit paths.
- Assist elderly and people with disabilities in seating and venue mobility.
- Provide directions to venue amenities such as bathrooms, concessions, water, the medical tent, and general orientation.
- Maintain festival entrances and monitor patron ingress and egress and perform closure procedures if needed.
- Search patrons bags and belongings respectfully and diligently to identity and prevent prohibited items from entering the venue
- Using magnetometers search patrons bodies respectfully and diligently to identify and prevent metal weapons from entering the venue.
- Attend on-site staff meetings and execute tasks under direction of House Leaders.

- A good attitude and excellent work ethic is a must.
Physical Requirements
- Able to lift/carry 50 lbs
- Able to experience periods of extended standing.
- Able to walk and climb considerable distances, including on the Hillside during the course of a work day.
- Able to grasp, lift, carry, push and pull heavy objects such as barricades, fencing and carts.
- Able to stoop, crouch and kneel while placing signage throughout the Grove.
- The ability to listen and speak is required. In a typical work day the employee will be interacting with large groups of people and they must be able to hear and clearly express their ideas with spoken words.
