Internship Purpose
The SXSW Music Festival Department seeks interns who want to learn about day-to-day operations, artist advancement, and data entry. Additional learning opportunities, such as music-related marketing projects, may be available. This position will provide hands-on experience in producing a large-scale music festival.
What You Will Learn - What we look for when considering booking artists for the SXSW Music Festival, and how to assist the team in reviewing artist applications.
- A&R research and data collection
- How to update artist records with information communicated via email, such as availability, visa information, special requests, etc.
- How to assist artists and their teams in advancing their SXSW showcase performances
- How to prepare promotional materials like playlists and photo collections for use on our website and social media platforms
Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Process artist applications
- Assist music programmers with evaluating artist applications
- Prepare promotional materials such as playlists and photo/video collections
- Send reminder emails to artists' primary contacts.
- Send reminder emails at various checkpoints leading up to the event to remind artists to upload materials to their online portal, add band members, select compensation, sign agreements, and complete other necessary tasks.
- Work the Artist Info desk at Registration during the festival.
Qualifications & Skills
To be eligible for an SXSW internship, you must be enrolled in an accredited university or college and live in Texas.
- Familiarity with Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and Excel.
- Excellent communication (phone, email, and face-to-face) and customer service skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Have a love of music and an appreciation for all genres.
- Have an interest in event planning and logistics.
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
- Prolonged periods of sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to lift to 15 pounds occasionally, as needed.
- Manual dexterity to operate standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, etc.
- May require occasional bending, reaching, kneeling, or climbing stairs.
- Ability to work in an outdoor environment, which may include exposure to varying temperatures or noise levels.

Work Location, Schedule & Pay
This position is located in Austin, Texas. Core business office hours are Mon-Fri, 10 am – 6 pm. Must be available to work from mid-October to mid-March. Time commitment is a maximum of 16 hours per week. Availability of 40 hours per week during the event may be required. This is a paid internship at $12.00/hr.
